Iranian actress Leila Hatami has joined the cast of a film about the Iraq-Iran war.

Iranian actress Leila Hatami has joined the cast of a film about the 1980-88 war that was imposed on Iran by Iraq, also known as the eight years of Sacred Defense.

Hatami will be one of the protagonists of Monir Qeidi’s film 'The Girls' Gang'.

The film is about the southwestern city of Khorramshahr which fell into the hands of foreign-backed forces of Iraq’s former dictator Saddam Hussein during the war.

Later, the Iranians launched a large-scale operation to liberate the city.

The film has begun the pre-production stage for a month, and the preparations for the flick are expected to be finished in the upcoming days.

Iraq invaded Iran and conducted airstrikes on a number of airbases in the Islamic Republic on September 22, 1980.

The war, which began 19 months after the victory of Iran’s Islamic Revolution, lasted almost eight years and ended on August 20, 1988.
